On this boat fishing is not a job, it is a craft? A job is something you do
to earn money. A craft is a passion that you pursue throughout your life,
using the best tools you can find, and if you are good at it you earn a living
doing it.
THE BOAT When we sea-trialed our new Mitchell Cove 32 in September of 2003, we knew in our hearts that we had built the ideal vessel for our fishery. The builder's attention to detail when coupled to our design provides the stability, the space and the amenities demanded by our guests. The 12 foot beam creates a cockpit that offers more fishing space than most 40 footers. Our guests, whether families with children or seasoned anglers, share our enthusiasm for Fins comfort and fish-ability.
THE EQUIPMENT We specialize in light tackle. We always carry an array
of rods and reels to meet the ever-changing conditions we encounter. As Pro
Staffers for St. Croix rods and
Avet reels we use rods and reels that are on the cutting edge of saltwater
fishing technology. Fully spooled reels with smooth, well-maintained drags are
balanced to rods that provide the cranking power needed to land your next trophy.
Our boat has been fitted for safety and comfort. Safety is our first concern.
State of the art electronics help us find our way to the fishing grounds and
back. Special deck lighting provides the visibility needed to fish while preserving
night vision Of course, the most important safety feature is the judgment of
the captain, honed by over 30 years of boating. Our decision to sail or not
to sail will take into account the weather, sea conditions and the experience
and capability of our patrons. We will make every effort to get the trip in.
CHOOSING A TRIP We fish from March through early January. During the
course of the season we will catch flounder, striped bass, fluke, bluefish,
weakfish, porgies, sea bass, false albacore, bonito, mahi-mahi and blackfish.
We can and do target each of these species and have a variety of strategies
for catching each. Which you choose to fish for will depend a lot on what you
want out of a trip. Our clients approach a trip with us in their own unique
way. Each wants something different out of the trip. Some want fish for the
table. Others want a nice quiet day on the water away from the phones, with
the peace being broken by an occasional fish. Avid fisherman, that have their
own boats, want to learn tricks from the pros. Newcomers to the sport want an
education on the basics. Moms and/or dads want to introduce youngsters to the
sport. We are happy to accommodate the needs of each of these groups. If you
let us know your expectations, we will do our best to meet them.
Unless you have a desire to target a specific species we suggest that you let
the captain pick the specie or species. The captain will identify the type of
fish that will give you the greatest satisfaction.
CHOOSING A BOAT If you decide to charter a boat you have hundreds
of boats to choose from. Why should you choose us? The answer is as simple as
we will make the trip fit your needs. Let's look at this from the perspective
of different groups that fish with us.
FAMILIES AND KIDS We love kids. We love to teach them how to fish and we want them to leave the boat with huge smiles. Here is how we do it. First, we suggest that you book an afternoon trip. Most kids don't react well to being awakened at the crack of dawn, poured into a car and then onto a boat. Let them sleep arrive at the boat awake and full of energy. Then we target a species that will give them the best chance at ACTION. If fluke are the best bet, we will fish in the nursery. We may have to throw most of them back because they are too small to keep, but the kids will have a ball as long as their rods are bent. If the porgies are around, the kids will be able to catch them two at a time. We will patiently teach them to fish. We will show them how to use the equipment, and coach them for as long as it takes. We will let them do as much as they are capable and willing to do. If they want to bait their own hooks, so be it. On the other hand, if they want, we will bait the hook, hook the fish and pass them the rod.
AVID FISHERMEN You love to fish. You told your wife before
you got married that you were addicted to her and to fishing and if she could
not share you with the sport to forget about it. You still love her, your kids,
your job and fishing but you don?t have the time. Then make the most of the
time you have. Sell the boat and fish with us. You will save time, money and
catch more fish.
Tell us the species you want to target and how you want to catch them and we
will suggest the right time to book a trip. In each of the last two seasons
over 4,000 striped bass came over the transom. They were wormed, eeled, jigged,
chunked, live-lined and trolled. Fluke to 10 pounds have been eased into the
net for our clients. When many of our competitors have been running offshore
for blues we have found huge blues and bass together hungry for chunks on light
tackle inside the bay.
NEW TO THE SPORT You bought a boat or are thinking about it. You want to fish but don?t really know how. Fish with us and we will teach you how. We will teach as much or as little as you want. You can learn how to tie rigs, bait hooks and where to start looking for fish based on the time of year and other conditions. Once you find the fish what tactics should you employ? How do you position the boat to get the best drift? How fast do you troll? How should the tides affect your decision-making? Are those fish on the fish-finder or rocks? Give us a try.
